Umar Damagum, the current acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), will continue in the role until another National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting takes place.

The decision was reached at a PDP caucus meeting on Wednesday night.

Debo Ologunagba, the PDP spokesman, said the caucus resolved to “reconstruct all reconciliation committees” within the party to address any grievances that may affect party unity.

When asked about discussions regarding the party’s chairmanship position, he disclosed that the matter would be brought up during the NEC meeting.

The meeting was attended by Nyesom Wike, the former Governor of Rivers State, and Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s presidential candidate for 2023.

The caucus meeting was held less than 24 hours before the party’s NEC meeting, which is scheduled for Thursday.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss matters related to the party’s leadership and finalize decisions made by various party organs.

The PDP is currently experiencing a leadership crisis, with members calling for the resignation of the Damagum-led NEC. Meetings such as those of the NEC and the party’s Board of Trustees have been organized to address these issues.

Meanwhile, Senator Iyorcha Ayu has withdrawn his appeal, which aimed to challenge his removal as the party’s national chairman.

Senator Ayu’s latest move is believed to be connected to the upcoming National Executive Meeting of the party.

In 2023, Senator Ayu was suspended by the PDP executive committee in Igyorov ward, Gboko Local Government Area of Kogi State, due to alleged anti-party activities.

He had initially taken the matter to court to challenge his removal.

However, in June of last year, a Federal High Court affirmed the party’s decision to dismiss him, leading to his withdrawal of the appeal.
